.KEY MESSAGES...

  weather later in the week.

* Another chance for valley rain and mountain snow may arrive by
  late this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

As the low pressure system tracks further inland today, we will
continue to see impacts areawide. For the Eastern Sierra, light
snow showers will increase in intensity this afternoon (snowfall
rates around 1"/hr) before backing off in the evening and
overnight. The Tahoe Basin will see snowfall rates peak this
evening (around sunset) with rates up to 1-1.5"/hr through
midnight at the latest. Current radar shows showers starting to
push into the Reno-Carson-Minden area now; rain will be light
through late this evening.

Wrap-around bands of precipitation late this evening and through
early Wednesday morning will keep light showers across W NV, the
Sierra south of the Tahoe Basin, and along the US-395 corridor
from Reno down to Bridgeport. After midnight, snow levels south of
the Tahoe Basin are expected to drop to 6-6.5 kft, bringing
possible light snow accumulations to the foothills along the
Sierra Front, including Virginia City. Because rain will have
proceeded the snow for foothill communities, it may be harder for
snow to accumulate. However, as temperatures drop ahead of
sunrise, any wet roads may become slick, possibly bringing impacts
to the morning commute. Slow down and allow for extra space!

Any lingering showers in the Sierra and out in the Basin and Range
are expected to push out by Wednesday afternoon, allowing for dry
conditions to settle back in through the weekend. Near normal
highs for mid-October are also expected to return by this weekend
with afternoon highs back up into the low 70s and mid 60s for
valleys and higher elevations, respectively. Cold morning lows
will stick around, though, with widespread AM freezes Thursday
morning, even out for the Basin and Range. Another weather system
looks to impact the area as soon as Sunday; but forecast
confidence remains low.

.AVIATION...

-SHSN for Sierra terminals today will switch to -SN after 00Z
today. MVFR/IFR conditions will be likely, with temporary drops
down to LIFR with the strongest bands of snow today. -SN will
switch back to -SHSN for KMMH after 15/09Z and after roughly
15/12Z for KTRK/KTVL.

Sierra Front terminals will see -SHRA, switching to -RA/RA after
00Z. CIGS/VIS may drop to MVFR/IFR for KRNO/KCXP/KMEV with the
heaviest precipitation this evening.

Otherwise, mountain obscurations and light winds can be expected
for all main terminals through Wednesday morning.
